Research Notes on Interpersonal Therapy
Interpersonal therapy is a type of therapy that focuses on the relationships with peers and family members. The goal is to identify problems with relationships and manage them.1 It is normally a brief form of therapy. Interpersonal therapy may be used along with medication.2
Fast Facts:
- The four basic problem areas addressed by interpersonal therapy are unresolved grief, role disputes, role transitions, and interpersonal deficits.3
- It is used in patients with major depressive disorder, HIV/AIDS, adolescents, and those with eating disorders among other conditions.4
- This type of therapy originated from the work of 1930s psychiatrist Harry Sullivan.2
