Research Notes on Interferons
Interferons are proteins produced as part of the immune system.1 Interferons are a part of the cytokine family of proteins.2 These proteins are used by the body to fight against viruses, parasites, and tumors.1 The interferons work at the earliest stage of viral infection.3

- Interferons inhibit viral replication within host cells.1
- There are 3 major classes: Type I, Type II, and Type III.1
- The type is determined by type of cell receptor they bind to.2
- They are not stored, but created in response to a specific stimulus.3
