Research Notes on Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy

Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is a method of radiation therapy which uses a computer controlled x-ray device to deliver radiation doses to malignant tumors.1 It is used to treat various types of cancer including prostate cancer, head and neck cancers, brain and brain stem cancer and many others.2 One of the benefits to IMRT is that oncologists are able to deliver higher doses of radiation in a very precise location.3

Fast Facts:

  • Treatment regimens are typically five days a week for six to ten weeks.1
  • The procedure is painless, however the patient is required to lie motionless.1
  • Other advantages to IMRT include an increased chance of destroying cancer cells, decreased chance of harming normal cells, and decreased radiation to normal surrounding tissues.2
