Research Notes on Insulin
Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas. It helps to regulate blood sugar levels, and it is needed to allow glucose to enter the cells and provide energy. People with type 1 diabetes are unable to produce insulin. Insulin injections are needed to enable the body to process glucose.1
Fast Facts:
- Hypoglycemia can occur if blood glucose becomes too low.
- There are four basic types of insulin: Rapid-acting insulin, regular or short-acting insulin, intermediate-acting insulin, and long-acting insulin.2
- After using insulin, you should eat a meal within 5 to 10 minutes.3
- Carry a piece of hard candy with you in case you experience low blood sugar.3
