Research Notes on Insomnia Types

Insomnia is not a sleeping disorder, but rather a symptom of one.1 Classical signs of insomnia are the inability to fall asleep or to stay asleep although sufficient opportunities are present.1 Different types of insomnia are classified according to their cause. Three types of insomnia are transient, acute, and chronic.2

Fast Facts:

  • Insomnia can also be classified as primary or secondary.3
  • Acute and transient insomnia are often short lived.2
  • Chronic insomnia may be related to health conditions or environment.2
  • Insomnia can also be divided by when it happens. Onset insomnia is defined as difficulty falling asleep. Middle of the night insomnia occurs when patients waken through the night and cannot fall asleep quickly. Terminal insomnia is defined as waking too early.4
