Research Notes on Insomnia Linked to Hypertension Risk
While researchers have long understood a correlation between sleep apnea and hypertension, new studies show a link between high blood pressure and insomnia. A recent study shows that those who routinely sleep less than five hours a night stand a 500% greater risk for developing high blood pressure than those who sleep more than six hours. Insomnia has also been linked to depression and an increased risk of suicide.1
Fast Facts:
- Those who slept between five and six hours a night had a 350% greater risk of developing hypertension than those who slept more than six hours a night.2
- Those who sleep six or more hours a night, regardless of how rested they may feel upon wakening, were reported to have a normal risk of developing hypertension.2
- By applying the study statistics to the general population, researchers believe that 8-10% of the population may be at risk for hypertension as a result of sleep disorders.3
