Research Notes on Insomnia
Most people suffer from occasional insomnia or sleeplessness due to things such as stress, depression, heartburn, pain, or drinking too much caffeine or alcohol.1 However, insomnia can be chronic. Insomnia can affect a person's energy level and mood, as well as weaken the immune system.1 The causes of insomnia are typically sleep disorders, physical disorders, or psychiatric disorders.2
Fast Facts:
- Insomnia is 1.4 times more common in women than men.3
- Some people only need four or five hours of sleep per night, but others need nine or ten hours to be fully rested.1
- Types of insomnia include: transient insomnia, acute insomnia and chronic insomnia.3
- Patterns of insomnia include: onset insomnia, middle-of-the-night insomnia, middle insomnia and terminal or late insomnia.3
