Inflammation refers to the body's immune reaction to the body's complex reaction to immunologic attack, infection by pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites), or other injurious agents (trauma, heat, chemicals). The usual characteristics are redness, swelling, warmth, and pain. Inflammation may occur in many regions of the body. Some examples of common inflammatory diseases are arthritis (inflammation of the joints), asthma (inflammation of the airways in the lungs), and tonsillitis (inflammation of the tonsils).
