Research Notes on Female Infertility

Female infertility is the inability of a woman to become pregnant. The most common causes of female infertility include fallopian tube damage or blockage, endometriosis, ovulation disorders, elevated prolactin, polycystic ovary syndrome, early menopause, benign uterine fibroids and pelvic adhesions. Infertility is a common medical condition, affecting approximately 6 million people in the United States every year.

  • Infertility is due to female factors in about 50% of cases.
  • 10% of infertility cases are left unexplained.
  • Female infertility can be prevented by avoiding sexually transmitted diseases' avoiding the use of illicit drugs, avoiding heavy or frequent alcohol use and adopting good personal hygiene and health practices
  • The chances of becoming pregnant decrease by 3-5% per year after the age of 30.
  • -- Women who smoke are 60% more likely than nonsmokers to be infertile.
