Research Notes on Infant GERD Treatments

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when there is upward movement of the stomach's contents during or after a meal.1 Treatment of the condition is optional and may not be necessary, because it is a common, self-limited process in infants. It typically resolves by six to 12 months of age.2 3 Modifications in sleeping and feeding are sufficient techniques to address the condition.4

Fast Facts:

  • Medications for heartburn in adults are used when infants are uncomfortable with the reflux.5
  • Higher calorie feeding is recommended when the baby is not growing well.5
  • Elevation of the upper body at night is generally the position recommended for patients with GERD.3
