Research Notes on Infant GERD Symptoms

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when there is an upward movement of the stomach's contents during or after a meal.1 An infant with GERD may experience frequent vomiting. Other symptoms include frequent or persistent cough, heartburn, gas, abdominal pain, colicky behavior, regurgitation, and re-swallowing.1

Fast Facts:

  • A small number of infants may experience more severe symptoms such growth problems due to an inability to hold down enough food, refusing to feed due to pain, breathing problems, or blood loss from acid burning the esophagus.2
  • An infant can experience symptoms of reflux without having GERD; more than 50% of all babies experience reflux in the first three months of life.3
  • Treatment is usually a modification of feeding techniques.4
