Indigestion

Research Notes on Indigestion

Indigestion, also known as dyspepsia, is discomfort or a burning feeling in the upper abdomen, often accompanied by nausea, abdominal bloating, belching, and sometimes vomiting. Often indigestion is not a serious health condition, but sometimes it may be a sign of an underlying intestinal disorder such as peptic ulcer, gallbladder disease or chronic appendicitis.

Fast Facts:

  • Indigestion can be accompanied by heartburn.
  • Avoiding foods and situations that can cause indigestion is one of the most successful ways to treat the problem.
  • As long as your indigestion doesn't go on for a long time or is not excessively painful, it's probably nothing out of the ordinary.
  • Indigestion accounts for roughly 70% of all gastrointestinal complaints.
