Research Notes on Inderal and Pregnancy
Conflicting studies on the use of Inderal during pregnancy have resulted in the medication receiving a category C listing by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Category C drugs are typically recommended to be used during pregnancy only when the potential benefit to the mother clearly outweighs any potential risk to the fetus. Should you become pregnant, or wish to become pregnant, while using Inderal, consult with your physician.1
Fast Facts:
- Inderal is the brand name of the generic medication propranolol that is sometimes prescribed in the treatment of high blood pressure, angina, arrhythmia, tachycardia, heart attack, and migraine prevention.2
- Low birth weight, fetal abnormalities, and miscarriage have all been reported in animal studies involving the use of Inderal.3
- Inderal is believed to be excreted in the breast milk of nursing mothers, and it is unclear what effects this medication may have on the nursing infant.3
