Research Notes on Inderal Dosage
As with all medications, your physician will consider many things prior to prescribing Inderal, including your overall medical history, age, and weight. When prescribed for the treatment of hypertension, the typical starting dosage of Inderal is 40 mg, administered twice daily. After several weeks of this therapy, your physician may find it necessary to adjust your dosage, based on your response to the medication. The average hypertension patient takes between 120 mg and 240 mg of Inderal a day. When used for angina, the recommended dosage is between 80 mg and 320 mg, taken in smaller doses several times a day. For symptoms of atrial fibrillation, the dosage of Inderal will be 10mg to 30 mg, taken three to four times a day at mealtimes. If Inderal is being administered after a heart attack, the dosage can be anywhere from 180 mg and 240 mg a day, again taken in smaller dosages several times daily. When prescribed for the prevention of migraine headaches, the initial dosage of Inderal is 80 mg, taken in several smaller doses.1
Fast Facts:
- Brand name for the generic equivalent propranolol.
- If you are prescribed the extended release form of Inderal, be sure to swallow the tablet whole; do not crush or chew it.2
- Inderal is not a cure for your condition, but rather a means to help control it.2
- Take any missed dose of Inderal as soon as it is remembered, unless it is time for your next dose. In this case, eliminate the missed dose completely and return to your normal schedule. Do not double up on this medication.3
