Research Notes on Incontinence in Women
Urinary incontinence affects millions of women, some losing only small amounts of urine, and others losing large amounts. Incontinence involves involuntarily losing urine. Women are twice as likely to have urinary incontinence than men.1 Pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, and the structure of the female urinary tract are the primary reasons for this difference.2

- Incontinence is a common problem.3
- Incontinence is more common in older women, but it is not an inevitable part of aging.2
- Incontinence can be caused by a number of reasons, including neurologic injury, birth defects, stroke, multiple sclerosis, and other physical problems.2
