Research Notes on Incontinence and Pregnancy
Many women during pregnancy experience incontinence. For some women, the incontinence may be mild and infrequent.1 Stress incontinence often occurs in pregnant women as the pregnancy progresses.1 Stress incontinence is caused by an increase in pressure on the bladder.2 Sneezing or coughing by pregnant women may lead to leakage as additional pressure is exerted.2

- Incontinence during pregnancy is usually treated with behavioral techniques like timed voiding and bladder training.1
- Your doctor may also prescribe the use of medications to alleviate the symptoms of incontinence.2
- Kegel exercises are one of the most effective ways to deal with incontinence during pregnancy.2
