Research Notes on Inattentive ADD
Using brain scans, Dr. Daniel Amen has defined six types of ADD: classic ADD, inattentive ADD, over-focused ADD, temporal lobe ADD, limbic system ADD, and ring of fire ADD.1 Inattentive ADD is often undetected until late childhood or early adolescence. Children that have inattentive ADD share many of the same symptoms as a child with typical ADD (also referred to medically as ADHD), but are not hyperactive. A child with ADD may have symptoms for this subtype that include: excessive daydreaming, frequent complaints of being bored, appearing apathetic or unmotivated, appearing frequently sluggish or slow moving, or appearing spacey or internally preoccupied.2
Fast Facts:
- Normally children with inattentive ADD have difficulty with homework.3
- Children with inattentive ADD are not overly active and do not disrupt the classroom or other activities they are involved in.4
- Children with inattentive ADD struggle with inattentiveness and distractibility, but not hyperactivity.5
