Research Notes on Sleep and the Common Cold

New research suggests that too little sleep can lead to sneezing and coughs. Those who sleep less than seven hours a night, are about three times more likely to catch a cold than those who sleep eight hours or more. This study adds to an already well known body of research on the link between sleep and the immune system.1

Fast Facts:

  • For this study, 153 healthy volunteers were infected with a cold virus, and locked in a hotel for five days.2
  • Volunteers who reported fewer than seven hours of sleep were 2.94 times more likely to develop cold symptoms, sore throat, and sneezing.2
  • This study was reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
