Research Notes on Imitrex and Pregnancy
The safety of Imitrex during pregnancy has not been clearly established. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has listed Imitrex as a category C medication when used by an expecting mother. Although there have been no well-controlled studies of Imitrex in pregnant women, the migraine medication has been linked to birth defects and miscarriage in some animal studies.1
Fast Facts:
- If you should become pregnant while using Imitrex, or wish to become pregnant, consult with your physician.2
- In some cases where the benefits to the mother clearly outweigh any potential risks to the fetus, a physician may recommend continued Imitrex throughout pregnancy.2
- Imitrex is a brand name of the generic medication sumatriptan.2
