Research Notes on Imipramine
Imipramine is the generic name for the antidepressant medication sold as Tofranil. It is a tricyclic antidepressant of the dibenzazepine group.1 Doctors prescribe imipramine most commonly for treatment of depression.2 As it causes sedation, this drug is particularly useful in depressed patients with insomnia, restlessness, and nervousness.3

- Imipramine elevates a person's mood by of boosting neurotransmitter levels in the brain.3
- In short term studies of major depressive disorder, antidepressants increased the risk of suicidality in children, teens, and young adults.4
