Research Notes on Idoxuridine


Idoxuridine, sold under the United States brand name Dendrid and the Canadian brand name Herplex, is a variant of deoxyuridine - a nucleoside analogue.1 Classified as an antiviral drug, the mechanism interferes with the activity of enzymes necessary for the replication of viral DNA cells which prevent viruses from multiplying.2

Fast Facts:

  • No longer available in the United States.3
  • Treats virus infections in the eyes associated with Herpes Virus 1.4
  • Wait at least 15 minutes after treatment before inserting contact lenses.5
  • Common side effects: burning, itching, swelling of the eyes and sensitivity to light.5
