Research Notes on IBS vs. IBD

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is not the same as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). IBD causes ulcers and damage to the bowel. In contrast, IBS does not cause damage, but causes the bowels to not function correctly. Symptoms of IBS are cramps, diarrhea, gas, and constipation.1

Fast Facts:

  • IBS may also be known as a spastic colon or a spastic bowel.1
  • People with IBD usually feel pain in the lower right abdomen.2
  • IBS is not an inflammatory disorder.2
  • IBS usually affects people between the ages of 10-20, or in their 30s.2
