Research Notes on IBD and Arthritis
The most common non-intestinal complication of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is arthritis. Peripheral arthritis, axial arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis are types of IBD-associated arthritis.1 IBD-associated arthritis is chronic and may increase or decrease depending on IBD flare-up occurrences. It generally affects large joints and does not usually involve both sides equally.2
Fast Facts:
- Pain, inflammation, and stiffness in the joints are the most common symptoms.2
- Bowel problems associated with IBD is present prior to arthritic symptoms presenting themselves.2
- IBD is a chronic disorder which includes Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
- Arthritis affects approximately 25 percent of patients diagnosed with Crohn's or ulcerative colitis.1
- The age group most affected by IBD ranges from 25 to 45.3
