Research Notes on IBD Surgery
Medication is the first line of treatment for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), but when that fails surgery may be required. Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are classified as two types of IBD, and each type of IBD can require a different type of surgery. Surgery can cure ulcerative colitis, but can only help with symptoms of Crohn's disease. Strictureplasty, resection, colectomy, proctocolectomy, and continent ileostomy are the surgeries performed for IBD.1
Fast Facts:
- Approximately 20 percent of ulcerative colitis patients will require surgery.1
- Multiple surgeries will be required for 66 to 75 percent of Crohn's patients during their lifetime.1
- In the United States, over 1 million people are diagnosed with IBD.2
- Uncontrollable bleeding, bowel perforation, and perianal disease are complications of Crohn's disease that may require surgery.3
- Uncontrollable bleeding, bowel perforation and obstruction, toxic megacolon, and cancer are complications of ulcerative colitis that may require surgery.3
