Research Notes on IBD Medications
Doctors prescribe medications for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that are aimed at controlling the cause of the IBD symptoms. Anti-inflammatory drugs are used to decrease the inflammation caused by IBD.1 Immunosuppressants are prescribed if treatment with anti-inflammatory medications is unsuccessful.1
Fast Facts:
- Steroids such as prednisone are prescribed on a short-term basis for active IBD.2
- 5-aminosalicylates are given frequently and in large doses and have few side effects.2
- Side effects for IBD Medications range from nausea to diabetes.2
