Research Notes on Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Two of the main types of Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. These diseases can cause inflammation of the large and sometimes small intestines. IBD is associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer. Medications with an anti-inflammatory effect, such as asacol or prednisone are usually given at the start of treatment and decrease the inflammation.1

Fast Facts:

  • IBD can limit quality of life due to pain, vomiting, diarrhea and other symptoms; however, it is rarely a fatal disease.2
  • IBD treatment may include medications or surgery in the more advanced stages of the disease.3
  • IBD is most common between the ages of 10 and 30. Whites tend to have a higher risk of developing IBD, also those of Jewish ethnic background have a higher risk.4
