Research Notes on Hypomania and Laughter
Inappropriate laughter is a symptom of a number of psychiatric disorders with hypomania as a feature.1 Affected individuals present as loud, hyperactive, attention-seeking, overly energetic, and "too happy."1 If laughter is the only symptom present, it is unlikely that hypomania is present.1
Fast Facts:
- Witty remarks, puns, and sometimes a flight of ideas can accompany the laughter.2
- Psychoanalysis suggests that relaxation of the severity of the superego is the cause.2
- Hypomanic laughter is a strong, hearty laugh - not a chuckle or giggle.3
