Research Notes on Hypoallergenic Dogs and Allergies
Many families desire the companionship of a pet dog, but are unable to have one in the household due to dog allergies. It is important to remember that while some dog breeds are recommended for allergic households (like Poodles, Bichon Frises, and American Hairless Terriers), no dog is 100 percent hypoallergenic.1
Fast Facts:
- Allergy-friendly dog breeds produce less dander and with regular grooming can keep allergens reduced to a tolerable level.2
- Allergens originate in a dog's skin, urine, and saliva which means even hairless dogs can cause an allergic reaction.3
- It is recommended that families conduct an allergy trial in a breeder's or volunteer's home.4
- Allergy trials can also be performed using a t-shirt or blanket which the dog lays on, then is used by the allergy sufferer to see if they have a reaction.4
