Sleep paralysis is temporary paralysis or loss of voluntary muscle control during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Temporary paralysis experienced just before falling asleep is called hypnagogic paralysis. This type of sleep paralysis occurs less often than hypnopompic paralysis.
