Hypersensitivity

Research Notes on Hypersensitivity

Hypersensitivity (also called hypersensitivity reaction) is when reactions (damaging, discomfort-producing and sometimes fatal) are produced by the immune system.1 These reactions require a pre-sensitized (immune) state.1 Hypersensitivity is the state of being abnormally sensitive, especially to allergens; responsible for allergic reactions.1 One can be hypersensitive to all six senses; and is described as having "an allergy to life".2

Fast Facts:

  • Touch, noise, scent, light, etc. make hypersensitive reactions occur.2
  • Hypersensitivity can cause mental confusion, emotional upset, and/or physical discomfort.2
  • A hypersensitive person may have a heightened sense of awareness and intuition.2

  • There are three types of hypersensitivity: immediate or anaphylactic hypersensitivity, cytotoxic hypersensitivity, and immune complex hypersensitivity.3
