Research Notes on Hypercholesterolemia Diet
Hypercholesterolemia can be controlled by eating a heart healthy diet and getting regular exercise, along with taking cholesterol lowering drugs if your doctor prescribes them.1 Eating a diet rich in fiber and other cholesterol lowering foods may help lower cholesterol as much as statin medication for some people. Eating a heart healthy diet includes choosing healthier fats, eliminating trans fats, limiting your dietary cholesterol, selecting whole grains, stocking up on fruits and vegetables, eating heart healthy fish, and drinking alcohol in moderation.2
Fast Facts:
- Hypercholesterolemia is the medical term for high cholesterol.
- Monounsaturated fat — found in olive, peanut, and canola oils — is a healthier option.
- Almonds and walnuts are other sources of healthy fat.
- Foods high in fiber include oats, barley, beans, vegetables, cornmeal, popcorn, berries, apples, and other fruits.3
