Research Notes on Hyperacusis
Hyperacusis a condition where a person has an extreme sensitivity to sound.1 A noise that's at a comfortable level for most people is piercing for those that suffer from hyperacusis.2 The most common sounds that irritate the ears of a person with hyperacusis are chewing or a clicking of a finger.1
Fast Facts:
- Elevated stress level, ear pain, and not tolerating everyday noises are symptoms of hyperacusis.3
- Some known causes of hyperacusis include head injury, hearing loss, ear infections, and reactions to certain medications.4
- Some patients use a pink sound CD or special hearing aids to help cope with hyperacusis.2
