Research Notes on Hydromorphone Dosage
Hydromorphone (Dilaudid) dosages depend on the form of the drug being taken. Hydromorphine is available in an oral liquid and 8 mg tablets. The typical adult dose of oral liquid is 1/2 to 2 teaspoons every three to six hours. The usual starting dose for tablets is 2 mg to 4 mg every four to six hours. Depending on the severity of the pain, or if tolerance to the drug develops, this dose may be increased.1

- Hydromorphone should never be taken in larger amounts than your doctor prescribes.2
- Abruptly discontinuing hydromorphone can cause withdrawal symptoms.2
- Swallow the pill whole, as it will be release into the body slowly.2
