Research Notes on Hydrocortisone

Introduced in 1952, hydrocortisone is another name for cortisol. Hydrocortisone is a topical (a cream which is rubbed onto the skin) steroid. The majority of topical hydrocortisone is purchased over-the counter. People use topical hydrocortisone to self-treat skin irritations caused by allergies, eczema, psoriasis, insect bites, poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac.

Fast Facts:

  • Low strength, .5% or 1%, ointment available without a prescription
  • Topical Hydrocortisone is sold under the following brand names: Caldecort, Cortaid, Dermacort, Hycort, and Hytone
  • Do not use if you have a fungal infection on any part of your body
  • Can be used for skin irritation and rashes, itchy anal and rectal areas, and irritation on the scalp
