Research Notes on Hydrocele
A hydrocele is a buildup of watery fluid around one or both testicles. It causes the scrotum or groin area to swell.1 About 10 percent of male infants have a hydrocele at birth, but most hydroceles disappear without treatment.2 Hydroceles can occur at any age later in life, but are most common in men older than 40.1
Fast Facts:
- Hydroceles are most common in premature babies.3
- A hydrocele presents as a painless, swollen testicle, which feels like a water balloon.4
- Hydroceles generally do not require treatment, but to rule out any dangerous causes a doctor should be seen.2
