Research Notes on Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid -- also called HA, hyaluronan or hyaluronate -- is a substance found in the connective tissue of the body that cushions and lubricates. Hyaluronic acid is used for osteoarthritis, skin treatments, as a filler for scars and wrinkles, as a lip plumper, as a tumor marker for some cancers, and during and after cataract surgery.1 Injection of hyaluronic acid into arthritic joints is called viscosupplementation.2
Fast Facts:
- Brand names for HA viscosupplementation include Hyalgan, Synvisc, Artzal, and Nuflexxa.2
- HA injections tend to give more relief for osteoarthritis than oral medications, but may not work for everyone.3
- HA for injection into deeper wrinkles on the face include the brand names Restylane and Juvederm.4
