Humulin U can be used during pregnancy. The medication is not expected to be harmful to the baby,1 however, Humulin U is only recommended for use during pregnancy when the benefit to the mother outweighs any potential risk to the fetus. Humulin U has been assigned a pregnancy risk category B by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA).2 Careful monitoring is required during labor and delivery, as the need for Humulin U may decrease following delivery.3 It is important to use this medication exactly as prescribed by a doctor.

  • If you become pregnant while on Humulin U, contact your doctor.
  • It is very important to control blood sugars during pregnancy.
  • Insulin does not cross the placenta.3
  • It is not known if Humulin U is found in breast milk.
  • Humulin U is a brand name for the generic diabetes drug insulin zinc suspension, extended,4 which is a man-made insulin product that mimics human insulin.5
