Research Notes on How to Treat Heart Disease with Chelation Therapy

Chelation therapy is a suggested alternative treatment for heart disease. It is suggested the man-made amino acid (EDTA) in chelation treatment may bind with calcium reducing plaque which is a contributing cause of atherosclerosis.1 Currently, inadequate studies have been performed on the effectiveness of chelation therapy as a treatment for heart disease.2 This therapy has not been evaluated or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is not recommended by the American Heart Association (AHA) for the treatment of heart disease.3

Fast Facts:

  • In 1998, the American College of Advancement in Medicine (ACAM) was charged with false advertising and unsubstantiated statements about the benefits of chelation therapy and heart disease by the Federal Trade Commission.4
  • Chelation therapy is used in the treatment for mercury and lead poisoning.5
  • Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is marketed as Edetate, Disodium, Endrate, and Sodium Versenate.1
  • A single chelation treatment averages fifty to one-hundred dollars and lasts from two to four hours with patients receiving from five to thirty treatments.1
  • This alternative therapy may be toxic and cause severe complications such as kidney damage, irregular heartbeat, and death.6
