Research Notes on How to Tell the Difference Between the Cold and the Flu
Based on symptoms alone, sometimes it can be difficult to tell the difference between a cold and the flu.1 Both can have symptoms such as cough, chest discomfort, general aches and pains, fatigue, and sore throat. Headache and fever are common with the flu; although rare, they can also be symptoms of a cold. It is helpful to remember that flu symptoms typically come on abruptly and are more severe than cold symptoms.2
Fast Facts:
- Colds are more likely than the flu to cause a runny or stuffy nose.1
- Typically, colds do not cause serious complications such as pneumonia or bacterial infections.1
- Since symptoms of a cold and the flu can be so similar, sometimes a doctor may need to do testing to verify if someone has the flu.3
