Research Notes on How to Tell if Your Child Has Depression
Depression in children is just as serious as depression in adults, but it is sometimes much harder to diagnose.1 Young children have a hard time describing their feelings, and even older children may have a hard time understanding them.1 If a preschool child (aged 3-5) shows signs of extended sadness, displays of anger and aggression, shyness, or moodiness and irritability, he may be suffering from depression.1 Physical complaints of depressed children often include headaches, nausea, and stomach aches.1
Fast Facts:
Older children may exhibit signs of depression if they appear to be defiant, angry, anxious, or withdrawn.2
Pay close attention to pictures that your child draws. If faces routinely are sad or crying, you may want to discuss this with your physician.2
Weight loss, extreme fatigue, lack of appetite, and difficulty concentrating are all signs of childhood depression, and if these symptoms continue for more than two weeks, you should contact your physician.3
