Research Notes on How to Reduce ADHD Medication Side Effects
While many patients with ADHD find great relief of their symptoms through the use of medications, the side effects which accompany the medication may be such that patients consider stopping the medication. To reduce side effects such as upset stomach, consider taking the medication with food. If you or your child becomes nauseated after eating, consider changing dinnertime to later in the evening so that the medication has begun to wear off and is less likely to cause stomach irritation.1
Fast Facts:
- If your medication seems to cause insomnia or difficulty sleeping, be sure that you are taking the medication very early in the day. Also, consider eliminating caffeinated drinks in the afternoon or evening.1
- Consult with your physician regarding the use of extended release or long acting medications if headaches are a problem.2
- If dizziness is an issue, be sure to get your blood pressure checked. Your dosage may need to be adjusted or your medication changed.2
