Research Notes on How to Prevent Medical Mistakes at the Pharmacy
It is important to know how you can help to prevent medical mistakes at the pharmacy. According to the National Patient Safety Foundation, out of three billion prescriptions there are 30 million dispensing errors at outpatient pharmacies every year in the United States. While some of these mistakes are minor, some can be serious, even deadly.1 Below are some helpful tips you can use to help prevent these errors.
Fast Facts:
- Understand the purpose of the drug you are taking; before leaving your doctor's office, be sure he has explained to you why you are taking this drug, its benefits and potential risks.2
- Use one pharmacy for all medications, so they have all of your prescription records.2
- Before leaving the pharmacy, check to be sure your name is on the prescription. Make sure the drug looks the same way your doctor described it to you.3
- Be sure you know your correct dosage.2
