Research Notes on How to Prevent Asbestosis
Preventing asbestosis can be as easy as avoiding products containing asbestos, such as asbestos insulation on pipes, insulated board panels, and sprayed asbestos which is used to coat columns, walls, ceilings, and beams.1 Wearing a protective face mask when working around asbestos or in older buildings which may contain asbestos can also help prevent someone from developing asbestosis. Asbestosis is a respiratory condition which affects the lungs due to inhalation of asbestos particles.2
Fast Facts:
- Frequent exercise, not smoking, and avoiding second hand smoke can also help decrease the risk of developing asbestosis.2
- Those who work around asbestos products should visit their physician regularly to schedule x-rays, which can help in diagnosing asbestosis early.2
- Early symptoms of asbestosis include shortness of breath and coughing.
