Research Notes on How to Prepare for Brain Surgery
Brain surgery can be a frightening experience for most people. By becoming more informed about the surgery there is a greater chance of reducing anxiety about the upcoming procedure.1 Prior to the surgery, your neurosurgeon may refer you to an internist for additional tests. Most patients prepare themselves by discussing with their family their wishes in the event that they are unable to make decisions concerning their well-being during or after surgery.
Fast Facts:
- Brain surgery patients should ensure that they will have proper at-home care after the surgery.2
- A period of fasting will be necessary prior to surgery.3
- Your neurosurgeon will most likely direct you to stop smoking six to eight weeks before the surgery.3
