Research Notes on How to Manage Joint Stiffness
Joint stiffness can be treated with moist heat, stretching, and the use of anti-inflammatory medications. If the underlying cause of the joint stiffness is arthritis, then arthritis medication may be necessary. Some studies suggest taking daily fish oil supplements for up to three months can reduce joint stiffness related to rheumatoid arthritis.1

- Moist heat should be be applied to the effected joint for approximately 20 minutes.2
- Range of motion exercises should be performed to increase mobility and decrease pain.3
- Anti-inflammatory medications may be taken to reduce pain and swelling.3
