Research Notes on How to Identify Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis Symptoms

Typical symptoms of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) include persistent joint swelling, pain, and stiffness that typically is worse in the morning or after a nap.1 As there are three forms of JRA, symptoms will vary depending upon the category.2 The main categories of JRA are: polyarticular JRA, pauciarticular JRA, and systemic JRA.2

Fast Facts:

  • Children with pauciarticular JRA have symptoms in four or fewer joints, with symptoms in larger joints such as knees.2
  • Polyarticular JRA affects five or more smaller joints such as those in the hands and feet.2
  • Intermittent fever, loss of appetite, weight loss, anemia, or a blotchy rash on a child's arms and legs may also signal juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.1
  • Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, which is also called juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), is the most prevalent form of juvenile arthritis, and it affects approximately 50,000 children in the United States.3
