Research Notes on How to Give a Back Massage

Any massage is meant to release tension and promote relaxation in whatever part of the body is being massaged. To give a back massage, first have the person receiving the massage lie stomach down on a firm yet comfortable surface. Position yourself at his or her side. Then, using your thumbs to massage both sides of the spine, begin massaging the lower back and work your way up to the neck. Reposition your hands at the lower back, and placing one hand on top of the other, use your palm to apply pressure while circling your hands in a clockwise motion.1

Fast Facts:

  • Always maintain contact with the back; slide your hands across the surface when moving to other areas.1
  • Other strokes include using your knuckles, fingers, or thumbs to apply pressure.2
  • Massage oil can remove friction between your hands and the back and make the massage more enjoyable.2
  • Ask the person you are messaging to let you know if you are applying too much, or not enough, pressure.2
