Research Notes on How to Get Rid of Calluses

A callus is a hard, thick toughened area of skin, generally found on the feet and hands.1 Typically, they are caused by pressure or friction and by simply alleviating this; it can help these areas to heal.2 Some alternate treatments include soaking the area in water and using a pumice stone or carefully choosing your footwear, being certain it is roomy and comfortable.2

Fast Facts:

  • Using salicylic acid will soften the callus.2
  • If necessary, your doctor can pare or trim down the thick skin for you.
  • Be careful when using a pumice stone; taking too much skin off can cause bleeding.
  • Surgery is rarely needed to treat calluses.2
