Research Notes on How to Cope with Depressed People
Depression is an illness that can bring pain and suffering to not only the individual diagnosed with the condition, but also to those around them. It is not uncommon for depressed people to withdraw from others, but you should try not to take this behavior personally.1 It's important that you not nag, pressure, preach or lecture a depressed person, but encourage them to seek treatment for their illness.1 Any mention of suicidal thoughts should be treated seriously, and it is important to seek help immediately.1
Fast Facts:
- It is important to recognize that depression is a physical illness, not simply a "state of mind" that can be rebounded from within a matter of moments.2
- Depression can be successfully treated 90% of the time, but there is no simple or speedy cure.2
- Consider attending counseling sessions with your loved one who is depressed. Be alert to the signs of relapse. Seek support for yourself and other family members who are trying to cope with a loved one's depression.2
