Research Notes on How to Choose the Right Bipolar Medications
Choosing the right bipolar medication is based on whether or not the majority of the illness is spent in the "highs" (mania or hypomania) or "lows" (depression).1 There is not necessarily one right or best medication for bipolar disorder. Often it may be a combination of different medications.2
Fast Facts:
- There are different categories of medication used to treat bipolar disorder, these include mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, antidepressants, and benzodiazepines.3
- You should not use medications as the only form of treatment, other therapy such as self-help programs and psychotherapy should be incorporated into a treatment plan.4
- Once the right medications are found it then becomes necessary to determine the optimal dose for maintenance therapy of the disorder.2
